Museums and Markets

Daily Drena: Out and About

It’s been a wonderfully relaxing week, catching up on to-do items and just enjoying the countryside. Today we ventured down to Figueres for a full day of exploring. On our way to find an open-air vegetable market, we found an open-air general market, full of all kinds of goodies and weird foods. The cheese I tried was amazing, but I also tried some sort of sausage meat thing that I had to spit down the street drain. It was really weird, fatty, raw-ish, and who knows what else. Ick. It took a while to get that taste out of my mouth.

Next on our agenda was a toy museum, full of unique and antique toys, including some interactive ones that brought out the competitiveness in both of us. Then on to the famous Dali museum, including Drew this time. Its black, curvy walls and little dark room offshoots, tight hallways, and tons of people made for a complete contrast from the pristine white Picasso museum in Malaga. Besides the people difference, it’s almost as if they worked to make their museums as opposite as possible, but both wonderful experiences in their own rights.

It started to rain right as we got back to our car, so next was off to the grocery store and booked it back home before the stream flowed too high for Blacky 2. (We were fine – the sun came back out.)

Colors of the Countryside

Daily Drena: Back on Bikes

We’ve been getting a lot of work done in the farmhouse, with daily outings on bike or foot. We’ve also been reading a lot (especially Drew), which is quite nice and rare. The bikes are a little low on maintenance, and we basically both have single speeds since the gears don’t shift. Drew’s has minimum braking ability, and the roads are hilly and rocky. But at least his has front shocks, unlike my rough rider. We sure do appreciate our lonely Yetis sitting in the garage at home!

The landscape surrounds us with rolling lush, green fields sitting in front of a hazy mountain backdrop, specks of historic villages peaking through bountiful trees, and stone farmhouses pop up intermittently as we ride along our trails. Poetic, we know.

To the Spanish Countryside

Daily Drena: Farmhouse!

We have decided to get a taste of the country life and have rented a farmhouse outside the tiny town of Cistella for almost three weeks. We’ve been looking forward to this ever since we came across it online, thinking it was out of our budget. But we managed to score it for an awesome discount, partly since it’s the off season again, and partly because we just asked. The excitement as we drive up the country road, wondering which house is ours, is comparable to a little kid’s on Christmas Eve. (Plus, the adrenaline runs high wondering if Blacky 2 is going to encounter a patch too rough for his abilities.) One stream crossing and multiple switchbacks later, we have arrived and it’s exactly what we are hoping! The views are gorgeous, the deck is awesome, there are two hammocks and a pingpong table, it’s quiet, and it’s full of old Spanish farmhouse charm.

The language here is Catalan, but it’s actually a good thing today. Our nice neighbor who welcomes us speaks only a little Spanish, just like us! So we are able to converse in Special Spanish without too much trouble.

Talk to ya’ll later – we’re checking out for a while!
